Nationally Recognized Motivational Speaker, Coach and Author, Dr. Steven Sobel visited McLean

 Dr. Steven Sobel visited McLean On September 18th  to talk about “The  Power of  Attitude – Creating an Extraordinary, Healthy, and Joyful  Future,” in the Pfirman  Dining Hall.

 Thanks to the generosity of the McLean Auxiliary, our staff, residents  and  families enjoyed a wonderfully uplifting and joyous presentation  with this  nationally adored motivator, educator, coach and author. Steve  brought his  trademarked humor, insights and wisdom that helps all of  us to gracefully  manage life's inevitable changes and challenges, both  professionally as well as  personally.

 In addition to appearances, Steve is the author of The Good Times  Handbook-  Your Guide to Positive Living and an Exciting Life and numerous CD and DVD  programs. He writes for several healthcare publications and has been featured on  INSIDE EDITION and also has been profiled in the Hartford Courant, Boston Globe and many other large newspapers. Steve is also the head coach of the premier men's summer pro-am basketball team in New England, The Springfield SLAMM, where he has coached many players from UCONN, Quinnipiac, Sacred Heart, University of Hartford and other CT based schools. He is also a former award winning school principal.

McLean volunteers participated in the Alzheimer’s Association’s Annual Walk to End Alzheimer’s

On September 28, over 20 volunteers represented McLean at the Annual Walk to End Alzheimer’s at Asnuntuck Community College in Enfield.

The energy and enthusiasm of our group matched our bright orange shirts!

New Graduates of Memory Care Volunteer Program

On September 24, 8 volunteers graduated from our 3rd class and have ll begun serving clients. The volunteers serve clients in our local community as well as here on our campus and their primary goal is to visit clients with the diagnosis of dementia or Alzheimer’s.

The visits may range from 15 minutes to an hour with a goal to create a positive moment in their day. This can include painting, listening to music, reminiscing, or enjoying the outdoors. To become a memory care volunteer, applicants complete a 12-hour training curriculum, as well as participate in an ongoing mentoring program and monthly in-service training on timely and useful subjects.

McLean Honors Volunteers at Appreciation Breakfast

Almost 400 volunteers recognized for work and dedication to McLean

On Tuesday, September 9, Lisa Clark, Vice President and Administrator of the McLean Health Center, alongside David Bordonaro, McLean President, and Kathy Cookson, Volunteer Coordinator, took the opportunity to honor McLean volunteers who provided extraordinary services in 2014 by holding a Volunteer Appreciation Breakfast in the newly renovated Pfirman Dining Room.

 “We want to thank you for the time and energy you devote to McLean and to our residents. It’s your dedication that makes McLean the vibrant and caring organization that it is. Your personal sacrifice for the benefit of our community is greatly appreciated,” Clark addressed the room full of volunteers.

 Lorraine Daigle, McLean Auxiliary President, also addressed the volunteers, thanking them for their continued service in making the Gift Shop an integral part of McLean’s successful fundraising efforts.

 “The McLean Auxiliary was established in 1972 to support and operate a gift shop, with the proceeds of sales to benefit residents, employees, guests and community. Today our Gift Shop, staffed by both auxiliary members and non-auxiliary volunteers is an important source of revenue, which in conjunction with auxiliary fund raisers, membership dues and memorial donations help support patient programs and services, as well as finance a scholarship fund designated for employees or children of employees pursuing a degree in healthcare.”

 Currently, McLean has a total of almost 400 volunteers who serve in various departments including Hospice, Memory Care, the Auxiliary, the Gift Shop, Therapeutic Recreation, Wellness, Admissions, Assisted Living, Development, and Meals-on-Wheels. Volunteer activities can include visiting with residents, assisting with programs and activities, administrative tasks, driving, and community outreach.
