Many people tell the McLean Wellness staff that the Virginia Darling Young Therapeutic Pool is Simsbury’s best kept secret! They want to change that and are offering a special open enrollment period for September. The pool temperature is kept at a soothing 92 degrees, perfect for aquatic exercise for those that have any form of arthritis, orthopedic issues and great for pre and post-operative exercise. You do not need to know how to swim nor will your hair get wet, unless you want to!
You may choose to pay by the class for $8, by the month with several options including a $50 plan that covers 2 classes a week and use of the pool in daily open swim periods, or an annual membership ranging from $365 to $741. Call 860-658-3750 or click for more information.
There are so many benefits of Aquatic Exercise. With an average of only 35% of weight bearing you can do so much more in the water than on land, it is a freeing experience! The viscosity of the water gives you resistance of movement in all directions and the ability to work opposing muscle groups at the same time. In the McLean Wellness Pool classes, you will experience the use of many different types of equipment to enhance your work out. The specially trained and Arthritis Association certified staff will lead you through a series of exercises to improve your overall strength, flexibility, heart health and, let’s not forget, you will have fun too! Some classes become social groups going to lunch afterwards or carpooling from Avon and other area towns. Marge Lindauer explained “It is great exercise for the whole body plus you have fun and form friendships.” Pat Dudley added “I’ve been coming to water exercise classes at McLean since 2006. I love the warm water. I feel good, and I’m happy. Laura and Jean are excellent teachers.”
The Virginia Darling Therapeutic Pool is the perfect setting for all adults of any ability. McLean offers the Arthritis Foundation Aquatic Program®.
