The McLean Auxiliary hosted its annual Strawberry Festival and Annual Meeting on June 4th. Over sixty Auxiliary members attended to enjoy delicious strawberry shortcake and hear an engaging interactive presentation by internationally-known psychic medium and life coach, Richard P. Jackson.
The Auxiliary, which sponsors many events to better the lives of the residents and staff at McLean, including the employee appreciation luncheon, May Day flowers delivered to each resident and the popular Casino Nights, donated $19,850 in gifts to McLean this year for the following items: $6,000 for the NEW Atwater Memory Care Assisted Living fitness corner; $3,000 for Driver Rehabilitation Program scholarships; $2,000 for a computer for the Vestibular Rehabilitation Program; $1,000 for a healing and humor speaker; $1,500 for a Welch Allyn Spot Vital Sign Monitor; $150 for 2 punch bowls for McLean’s dietary department; $2,000 for patient personal needs; $1,200 for McLean’s Horticultural Program; $1,500 for music programming, and $1,500 for outside entertainment. The highlight of the Annual McLean Auxiliary Strawberry Festival is the presentation of the scholarship to a McLean employee or the child of an employee pursuing a career in healthcare. This year two scholarships were awarded. The annual McLean Auxiliary scholarship in the amount of $1,500 was given to Sarah Daniel, a nursing major at St. Joseph College. In addition, a one-time $1,000 scholarship was given in memory of Gregory B. Thomas, RN, McLean’s first Director of Nursing, to a college student majoring in nursing. Mrs. Terry Thomas was on hand to see Samantha Christensen receive the scholarship in memory of her late husband. Samantha is a nursing student attending Radford University in Radford, Virginia. Both scholarship recipients and their mothers work at McLean. The scholarship money, as well as the grants awards to departments at McLean, are made possible mainly because of the thousands of hours the Auxiliary members volunteer running the Auxiliary Gift Shop, located off of the main living room area.
The slate of officers for the 2012-2013 year is: President - Alison Bigman; 1st Vice -President - Marge Brown; 2nd Vice-President - Pat Gallagher; Recording Secretary – Vickie Dirienzo, and Treasurer - Connie Norstrom.
