Dr. Bernie Siegel presented "Healing the Heart of Caregivers" at The New McLean last Thursday to Residents, Families and Staff

Best-Selling Author Offered Inspiring Lessons for Caregiving, Healing – and Living Life to the Fullest.

Thanks to a generous gift from the McLean Auxiliary, residents, family members, and staff had the opportunity to listen and learn from best-selling author  Dr. Bernie Siegel as he presented “Healing the Heart of Caregivers” in the McLean Health Center on Thursday, May 8th.

Dr. Siegel, a graduate of Cornell University Medical College and a surgeon for many years, has traveled internationally and touched lives around the world with his inspirational and very poignant life lessons he’s gathered over the years working with his patients, their families and caregivers.

Retired in 1989 with a passion for helping patients, their families and caregivers, Dr. Siegel understands the importance of empowering the patient. He is the author of 13 books, each one written with the sole purpose of reaching those struggling with health or life challenges.

During his time addressing the group, he encouraged the audience to “find what makes you lose track of time.” He followed the request by presenting the idea that if you love what you do, and are passionate about it, you are less aware about the time. Then, with a smirk and a nod he playfully asked the audience “How can you age if you never know what time it is?” – to which he was rewarded with smiles and laughs.

Dr. Siegel continued by singling out the nurses in the audience with a simple request – specifically for those caring for elderly patients – “Help them live. You’re not just trying to cure their disease; you’re helping that patient have a life, so be kind and compassionate.”

During the hour and a half session, Dr. Siegel shared stories and drawings done by former patients as a way to illustrate the importance of recognizing underlying or long-standing obstacles that can sometimes hinder treatment or cure. He balanced that message with reminding the audience of the power of the mind when it comes to healing, and the benefit of positive thinking. He ended his presentation with a few simple instructions:

  • Be your unique authentic self
  • Take care of yourself
  • Learn to laugh for no reason
  • Don’t let the kid in you die

Valuable lessons for caregiving, healing … and living life to the fullest.

McLean Auxiliary Brightens Up May Day

Flowers delivered to residents help celebrate the season.

While the sun was breaking through the clouds outside, smiling faces were shining inside as McLean Auxiliary members happily filled vases and delivered flowers to over 150 residents on Thursday.

The annual May Day Flower distribution has been spreading joy for more than a decade. The card that accompanies the flowers says “Thinking of you today and every day. From the McLean Auxiliary,” and brings smiles to not only the residents but to the volunteers as well. “It’s amazing to me that it’s the men who love getting the flowers the most, I think mainly because they’re usually the ones to give flowers, not receive them,” says auxiliary liaison and secretary Vickie Dirienzo.
