Flute Music Floats through McLean

Allison Mackenzie Hughes plays her flute in a hallway of the McLean Health Center.Allison Makenzie Hughes of Simsbury studies flute at Hartt College at the University of Hartford. She will spend much of her summer at performing arts centers but thought that spending three weeks with elders would be a great experience. The residents of the McLean Health Center have welcomed Allison with open arms. She reports that she is falling in love with many of them. Spending three to four hours a day playing for the residents is a great way to for her practice and a wonderful gift she is giving to others. She visits residents in their rooms and pays soothing music.

I watch as she approaches a resident in the hall and asks him if he likes Mozart. “Yes,” he emphatically answers. Allison starts playing a Mozart selection which draws other residents to the impromptu performance.McLean Health Center resident enjoys the Mozart.

Allison played this week for a regular resident cocktail hour on the campus. Carol Carlisle extolled the music and Allison’s way of performing. “It was lovely. Her selections are marvelous…the perfect musical accompaniment to our social gatherings.”
