December 6th was a very special day in Simsbury and, in particular, at McLean. Bernice Martin shared her 106th birthday with many friends, loved ones and staff. For several days leading up to the big one, she happily opened many cards delighting particularly in the ones with kittens and flowers. Mrs. Martin giggled with us each time one of the musical cards played Happy Birthday. Her birthday bear that had a candle on top of a cupcake which lighted while the bear sang the birthday song then extinguished delighted her each time she showed it to another visitor.
On her special day, she dressed up in her favorite rose patterned skirt, had her hair done and was the queen of the campus greeting so many who came to be part of the festivities. Bernice has been a gracious, warm, curious lady all her life and this continues to be true as she lives into her 107th year.
Mrs. Martin is a lifelong Simsbury resident, a fixture ridding in a convertible in the parades, an active member of the DAR and Simsbury Garden Club, and a lifelong parishioner of the First Church of Christ. May we all follow her wonderful example of how to live life to the fullest for a very long time.
