Are You Getting the Latest Treatment for Your Arthritis?

January 6, 2022

At McLean our skilled physical therapists (PTs) have years of experience treating patients with osteoarthritis (OA) of the knees, hips, shoulders, and other joints. Your PT will conduct a thorough examination and evaluation to determine your impairments and develop an individualized treatment program catered to your specific needs.

Our PTs are trained in manual therapy techniques to help decrease your pain and improve the mobility of your affected joints. This may include joint mobilization, soft tissue mobilization (including instrument assisted), myofascial release, trigger point release, muscle energy techniques, and manual stretching.

Your PTs will have various modalities at their disposal to be used in your plan of care. This may include hot packs to decrease your pain and warm up stiff muscles, cold packs to decrease pain and swelling, ultrasound to address inflammation, pain, and stiffness, and e-stim to help with pain or strengthening exercises.

You will be instructed in various exercises as part of your plan of care. This will include stretching exercises to improve the flexibility of your muscles and joints. Strengthening exercises will allow the surrounding muscles to better support your painful joints and improve your mobility. Additionally, your PTs are trained in use of the Biodex, a computerized strength measuring instrument which can be used as part of your strengthening exercise and to digitally track your progress. Your biomechanics, or how your body moves, will be assessed. You will be instructed in exercises to help correct poor movement patterns in order to decrease your pain and improve your overall function. You will also be provided an individualized home exercise program to allow you to continue performing key exercises and progressing at home.
