McLean Honors Breast Cancer Survivors

This past week McLean Wellness staff honored Wellness participants who have experienced Breast Cancer, by offering support and camaraderie in all of their wellness programs.

We all know that this disease has affected many women and men in our community. Many people are not comfortable talking about their experiences.  All of the Wellness Staff and Aquatic Instructors offer an atmosphere where participants become very close, and offer each other friendship and support. As a result, many lifelong friends are mad.

In an Aquatic setting participants may feel more vulnerable having to wear a swim suit, especially if they’ve had had breast surgery. McLean helps these women feel more comfortable by letting them know that there are many companies that make swim suits to fit special breast prostheses that are designed to look and feel similar to the natural breast is weight, shape, color and texture. A few of their suggestions are:  www.make(me)heal.com, www.swimoutlet.com, and www.H20wear.com.

Carol MacLeod, McLean’s Wellness Assistant and Fitness Trainer would like all women to be aware of the health benefits of leading a physically active life.  Studies have shown that women who were very active at the time of their cancer diagnosis have a much higher survival rate and a lower risk of recurrence as compared to sedentary women.

A fitness routine three times a week is a good start.  Combining your routine with brisk walking and weight training will give you a well-rounded program and may improve strength as well as mood.

At McLean Wellness, we offer a fitness center that includes a gym and a warm water therapeutic pool – both are open to the public.  Aquatic classes are scheduled throughout the day and are of various levels.  We also participate in the Healthways  SilverSneakers® Fitness Program.  McLean Wellness is where everyone can feel comfortable in a non-judgmental community.
