McLean's Adult Day Care Center

What should I bring with me when I come to spend a day in Adult Day Care?
Nothing special, just wear comfortable clothes and walking shoes.

Can I have my father attend only one day a week?
Yes, your father can attend for as little as one day a week or as much as five days a week.

Can I drop off my father rather than pay to have McLean pick him up in their van?
Yes, many people choose to transport their loved one to our programs. Sometimes it is easier to coordinate. They drop them off on their way to work, so there is no lapse in supervision.

I am having trouble taking care of my dad's hygiene at home. Can the Adult Day Care program help me with this?
Yes, showers are available. Sometimes a person may have a shower and their clothes will be laundered while they are at the Adult Day Care Center.

Is there funding available to help me pay for my mother to attend?
Yes. You should speak with the Director of the Program, Terry Dell. Terry will provide you with a full explanation of how it works, and the forms you need to apply.

Alzheimer's

Is this a separate unit?
McLean does not have a specialized dementia unit because it offers exceptional specialized dementia care throughout the facility. All staff, who work directly with patients with Alzheimer's disease or a related dementia; nursing, CNAs, and social services staff, receive up-to-date dementia-related training and education on an on-going basis.

Are there recreational programs?
McLean offers a wide range of recreational programs, on a daily basis, to all residents of the facility. Those programs include: arts, crafts, gardening, and music, pet therapy, special guest visitors, specialized groups, out-trips, and a variety of presentations. There are also specialized sensory-related programs designed specifically for patients with advanced dementia. Residents go outside in nice weather to the beautiful gardens and the rooftop terrace.

What about family support?
McLean offers an on-site, monthly, Alzheimer’s disease and related dementia support group meeting. The group is open to both family members at McLean, and to the public.

Aquatic Programs

Will insurance pay for my class?
Generally, insurance does not pay for group water exercise classes. However, the staff can provide you with a receipt and you can submit this to your insurance company, along with a doctor's order. You may be successful. We do not do billing.

Can I sign up for part of a session?
No, but if you begin a class after the second week of a session, the fee will be pro-rated.

May I get a refund if I do not finish the session?
Once you begin a class, we cannot provide a refund.

Can I try out a class first before I sign up?
We recommend that you come and try a class first. This way you can be sure that the class is right for you.

Hospice

What happens if I need more care than my family can provide at home?
Usually Hospice care is provided in the home, but sometimes it becomes necessary to admit the patient to a hospital or extended care facility. McLean has contractual arrangements with local hospitals and facilities for symptom and pain management, terminal care and respite. McLean can arrange for this care in a facility near your home and will stay involved by guiding the facility and other caregivers regarding the patient's treatment.

McLean offers comprehensive care to patients residing in extended care facilities and other settings - the same care that is provided in patients' homes.

Is my personal physician involved with my care?
Personal physicians are encouraged to continue caring for their patients in conjunction with Hospice. Or, if the Hospice physician takes on primary responsibility, a patient's physician can be kept fully informed.

What about follow-up care for my family?
Time alone cannot heal the grief caused by loss. Hospice care for grieving families is available months before the loss of a loved one and continues through individual and group bereavement services. Professional bereavement counselors and trained volunteers offer friendship, support and understanding. During these months of adjustment, Hospice is there.

Rehabilitation

How long will my rehabilitation last?
Your length of stay depends on your needs, your goals, your medical situation, your tolerance to therapy, your rate of recovery, and the situation you have at home. For people having elective surgery the average stay for rehabilitation in our Post Acute unit is 5 to 10 days. If you are receiving care in our outpatient center, the length of treatment ranges from 3 weeks to 3 months.

How much therapy will I receive?
If you are a patient on our Post Acute unit, the number of sessions and their length depend upon your needs. Usually you will receive one or two 30-minute occupational therapy sessions each day, 5-7 days per week, and one or two physical therapy sessions 6-7 days per week. If you are receiving treatment in our outpatient center, sessions usually last 30 minutes, 2-3 times per week.

Should I wear anything special?
Make sure you have comfortable, loose clothing.

Independent Housing - Apartments and Cottages

  • A great site for free publications and online access to consumer, economic and health information: www.aarp.org

How long do I have to wait before I can get into one of the apartments or cottages?
The first step is to complete an application and submit it along with the $500 application fee and a health report from your physician. With the new apartments, the wait is much shorter for apartments than in the past. It is hard to predict when the type of unit one desires will be available. It is best to call and discuss your needs with the Village staff.

When my parents are no longer able to manage independently, will there be room for them in the Health Center?
Village residents have priority access to all McLean services including the Post Acute and the Long Term Skilled Nursing Units in the McLean Health Center.

Are pets allowed in the apartments or cottages?
Pets are only allowed in the cottages. There is a special security deposit, and you are responsible for cleaning up after your pet. If there are repeated complaints from other residents about your pet, you may be asked to give it up.

What happens if I run out of money while I am living in the cottages or apartments?
Residents of the Village are responsible for paying their rent when they enter McLean and into the future. Title IXX does not apply to independent housing. Some Cottage residents have special rental agreements in consideration of their special needs. McLean thus budgets a subsidy for these residents and will continue to do so in the future.

If my mother gets sick while living in the apartments, is there someone to look after her?
McLean Village residents are part of the McLean continuum and have priority access to any of McLean's healthcare programs. These programs include Post Acute Care, Rehabilitation, Home Care, Adult Day Care, Long Term Care, and more.
