Community Services

Helping you feel right at home.

Today more and more people are choosing to stay in their own homes longer than ever as they age. It's where they are most comfortable and, often, it's the most economical option. McLean has a wide range of services to make this option easier and safer through its Community Services programs.

Health and living support in your own home:

Support Groups

All support groups are free, but registration is requested: 860-658-3700

Alzheimer's Family Support Group

Last Monday of each month from 1:30 - 2:30 p.m. in the Music Lecture Room at McLean.

Please join us for a time of sharing, learning, or just listening. Dianne Thurston, MA, facilitates the group. Please call 658-3915 for further information.

Bereavement Support Groups

Spousal Bereavement Support Group (age 55 and younger): 3rd Tuesday of each month from 7:00 - 9:00 p.m.

Bereavement Support Group (age 55 and older): 4th Tuesday of each month from 10:00 - 11:30 a.m.

Please call Margi Crane, LCSW, at (860) 658-3700 for more information on Bereavement Support Groups.

Meal Delivery

Meals-on-Wheels

Delivers two meals a day, weekdays, to homebound individuals who are unable to prepare their own meals. Recipients receive a hot noon meal and cold evening meal. Regular and special diets are available. Charges are billed on a monthly basis.

Meals-on-Wheels provides services in the towns of Avon, Canton, East Granby, Granby and Simsbury. Referrals may be made by anyone. A doctor's diet authorization will be requested. Two days notice is appreciated. To begin service, telephone the Meals-on-Wheels office at McLean, (860) 658-3980.

Emergency Monitoring

This telephone hotline delivers immediate response for accidents and medical emergencies - 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Designed to take the worry out of knowing someone is home alone. Participants wear a light-weight help button so they can send out a call easily. In addition this system offers 'convenience call', giving subscribers the added feature of being able to answer their phone by pressing their personal transmitter. No more rushing to get the phone. A simple press of the button activates the console as a speakerphone when receiving a call. Easy installation, monthly subscription fee, call answered by a McLean homecare staff member. Call (850) 658-3954 for more information.

Audio & Visual Aids

Sorenson Adaptive Technology Center

Offers video and audio equipment and information for people with low vision, hearing impairments and other physically restrictive conditions. This therapeutic approach decreases isolation and increases communication among elderly and/or disabled people.

Please call (860) 658-3700 for more information.
